You can be sure when you travel? Not me ... And that's what I thought after the turn of the guarantees offered by my credit card ... I was not very aware about until various recent events lead me to dig a little more topic: meet the long-term travelers, Morgan, and Brian Syphay, adventure Solidream including an account of a serious injury sustained while traveling (a fracture of the rib cage). The exchange, as part of a professional network that I was involved with an insurer that has asked me about my practice sen trip ... Echoing also an exchange with my new bank adviser, after fleeing my last bank due to an error on their part ... And finally, unfortunately, the repatriation of a friend, in great physical and psychological problems at the other end of the world ...
All these (my) adventures made me think about the usefulness of a travel insurance, whether for weekends or holidays or a little longer trips. I decided to look into the matter and to indulge in a series of articles, some elements gleaned here and there to help you in your choice, at least you raise awareness of insurance trip.
Why travel insurance?
While I changed bank, I was interested more loan guarantees offered by the Cooperative Credit card, those who accompany you in your travels ... with a Visa or Mastercard, you already have insurance when your trips to the card holder and spouse, for example. But beware, the coverage is only guaranteed beyond a radius of 100km from home and during the first 3 months of travel. So for long journeys, it is better to turn to a dedicated insurance.
Another point, insurance linked to credit cards often have coverage limits, medical expenses including inadequate. And yes, if you're not too used to pay hospital fees as in France for example, there does not arise the question too. I have read and heard here and there that day in hospital can cost up to 8,000 euros! It's good to have this figure in mind when insurance is selected ...
