A few months after my trip to Georgia, it's time to deliver some pictures of Georgia and one of its treasures: Svaneti. It is clear that even Wikipedia is not stingy with details on this region of Georgia, at the foot of the great Russian and somewhere north of the country, dotted with medieval villages gently barely served by some portions of potholed asphalt by weather ...
Georgia at the foot of the Caucasus
This is one of the great strengths of this region. With Mount Chkhara which rises to 1,201 meters, her immaculate top of snow is visible from the valley svanie. The town of Mestia or village more picturesque Ushguli (pictured below) will be an interesting basis for departures treks and hikes in the surrounding mountains. Allow several days' journey by route. Glaciers are within the day. I went to the glacier of Mount Chkhara since Ushguli, a true marvel for 6 hours walking on the valley floor ...
This corner of Georgia is also perfect for photo enthusiasts. Did you know that Georgia is a mecca for bird watching?
A mean age of air in the villages of Georgia
From Batumi and Tbilisi, Svaneti is not an easy girl and not be approached like that ... Allow several hours away (about 6 hours from Batumi) in marshrutka (minibus taxis and collective). I was even tossed for 3 hours to cover the 45 kilometers that separate Mestia of Ushguli! But believe me, the valley opens in the Caucasus since this little haven is well worth a visit! By cons, we must admit that driving in Georgia is relatively sporty at least readily apparent to the rally! Anyway, this destination will delight all fans of slow tourism ...
We are then in another era, amid the cows and pigs that make their life among the cobblestone paths. We meet some riders and their mounts, certainly more convenient than minibus or 4 × 4 to clear a path in the mountains ... Only a few electrical cables and trash reminder to our civilization, but they find it difficult to hide the immense mountains and sovereignty of Mother Nature in these places.
Svanies towers, cultural and historical heritage of Svaneti
Mestia is an excellent example of a typical city of Svaneti where svanies towers escape from village rooftops to climb up to 25 meters high. Most families and households have a tower in which the entire family took refuge in attacks by looters in the area. These towers are deemed impregnable and are impressive, even more when you have the chance to ride on the roof open at night ...
Do you know this part of Georgia? What about you? Maybe it reminds you of other remote countryside equally charming?
